Contemplating My Capsule Wardrobe
I reckon that this title is about as pretentious as blog post titles can get. Anyway, I am trying to keep my mind of the perturbing sale frenzy which is going on in Paris at the moment and want to instead focus on what I already own – instead of what I ‘need’. Or perhaps, rather, crave. So bear with me if this post strikes you as a random jumble of thoughts instead of a proper update.
Although one of my personal style resolutions was to experiment a bit more with colour, I have been going back to my black garments for the last month. It’s funny how my style is only steerable up to a certain height; at the end of the day I just wear whatever I feel most comfortable in. Or maybe it is because the colder days seem a bit endless, and that my warmest cashmere jumpers and cardigans are all black? I wanted to implement more navy into my wardrobe, but it is only normal that replacing basic pieces takes a fair amount of time. About the only thing this week that I have worn that hasn’t been black has been my A.P.C. Madame coat – which is, surprisingly, navy.
The sale did not drive me into madness that much, though. I went to Le Bon Marché with a friend the other day and tried on the A.P.C. Doll coat and the fit was absolutely perfect – a straight, linear cut with slim, well-cut sleeves and it had the most beautiful round collar. They did not have a size 34, so I went home empty-handed. Maybe for the better – although I already mentioned I am actually in need of a proper winter coat.
Instead of thinking of what I need, I wanted to create an overview of the basic black garments that are already in my possession.
Basic black garments
Black cashmere jumper, black trousers, black ballet flats and black woollen scarf
Call it an endless variation on a theme, but I purchased a black Uniqlo V-neck cashmere jumper at the Marais store a while back. I wanted to change a bit from my regular O-neck one. I have been wearing that jumper non-stop and the V-neck gives a bit of a feminine change – I love combining it with my golden baptism necklace. The black tapered trousers I always come back to are a pair by Isabel Marant (which I am wearing here), and my ballet flats are – instead of the Porselli ones pictured above – the Repetto flats. Not that I can wear them at the moment, though – I am guessing that will be in late April soonest. The black Acne scarf on the right is a garment that I have been wearing non-stop both last and current winter.
I need to remember that these four garments are currently the backbone of the black section of my wardrobe and prove that I do not need to indulge in the current sale hysteria – I already own enough to work with. These four pieces are sufficient for the moment and will, hopefully, last me a long time.
