Jane Birkin in La Piscine

Jane Birkin in La Piscine, the cult classic of 1969, is the embodiement of the English mod scene and French nonchalance. The blunt fringe, a simple gold necklace and the waifish figure combine perfectly with her exquisite choice of clothing. Slightly loose fitting t-shirts and mini-hemlines comprised the laidback cool uniform of Jane Birkin in the sixties and seventies. I’ve been wondering who did the styling in La Piscine, as Jane’s outfits look like something she would have chosen herself to wear. For those who want to do the effortless cool yet chic look: Jane’s style could be just the ticket.

The Summer dress

Jane is seen lounging and lingering around for about half of the movie. It’s the outfits she is seen wearing that are comfortable, light and that are complementary to the surroundings of the villa in Southern France. All you need to reenact this look is a sundress, preferably made of cotton or linen and worn barefoot or with simple tan sandals (I have my trusty K.Jacques sandals).

The soft t-shirt and cropped jeans

After la sieste the sundresses come off and it’s time to get cozy. Late Summer evenings might get chilly, so cropped jeans do the trick for that breezy ankle look. The MiH ‘Paris’ jeans have been a classic for years and are worn to death by many stylish Parisiennes. A low cut jeans surely looks bohemian with a t-shirt tucked in. This soft version by Petit Bateau will drape around your body and the good quality the brand is known for will last you seasons. And as Jane knows best: there is nothing that looks better on tanned skin than a soft white t-shirt.
